A few weeks ago, Little Miss Honey blogged about a nail salon with a difference: a social enterprise that teaches single mothers & women from low-income households skills to help them become self sufficient and empowered. I don’t always do my nails (well, not since my Chicago days anyway) because I always seem to mess them up too quickly. I tried gel nails at some point too, but I didn’t like how long they stayed on my fingernails (and how difficult they were to bite off!). Anyway, with the Beau being here, I thought I should try to make my nails look a little bright and colorful. Plus, I was taking precious vacation days to spend the time with him and vacation is all about pampering yourself right?
So on the Beau’s very first day here in Singapore, I dragged him to Haji Lane. Well, not exactly dragged. We kind of stumbled onto it. We were somewhere on Arab street, and we saw a small little lane and thought we ought to turn into it and found all these cool expensive hipster stores and we just kept walking. Then we overhead a group of three women talking about The Nail Social and I absolutely insisted on going in (Doug had his heart set on a smoothie, I had to persuade him that there was a cafe at the salon).
We entered this really lovely room on the second floor and were immediatelygreeted by Cheryl and welcomed with offers of lemonade. Freshly made. The lemonade was delicious. I swear that even if it wasn’t because I really wanted my nails done, I would find an excuse to get something done just so that I can taste that delicious lemonade again.
Each of the manicure/pedicure chairs also have an ipad mounted, allowing you to watch movies, etc. As I chose only an express manicure (sometimes, there’s only so much torture you can put your man through at any one time), I didn’t watch the movie. But they treated Doug to some lemonade and had him seated next to me while they worked on my nails. Lovely. I chose this lovely blue shade from OPI. I think its called “I forgot my pocketbook”? Anyway, my nails were shaped and colored in a super fast time. And the two girls that were there were so lively and sweet that time passed very quickly.
I really liked the place. It was clean, and calm. And there were a large number of colors available. If it wasn’t because I was worried about ruining my freshly painted nails, I totally would have taken more pictures. Also, its quite small (I saw only 5 chairs) but there’s a cute cafe at the back if you have very patient significant others who need to cool their heels. So definitely call for an appointment.
